Ohara Talk - Ohara Dangi

Japanese: 大原談義 - おおはらだんぎ

In 1186 (Bun'ei 2), Honen, the founder of the Jodo sect, was invited by the Tendai scholar Kenshin to debate with great scholars of various sects at Shorin-in Temple in Ohara, north of Kyoto. It is also known as the Ohara Mondo. It originated when Kenshin met Honen and asked about the path to liberation. Honen told him that ordinary people could be reborn in the Pure Land through the strong connection of the vows of Amida Buddha, but he still had doubts and spent 100 days in seclusion studying the Pure Land scriptures, after which he invited Honen back for another debate. In addition to Kenshin, scholars from various sects including Myohen (Sanron), Jokei (Hosso), Chikai (Tendai), and Zangaku (same) attended the meeting and questioned Honen's teachings on the Pure Land sect.

1186年(文治2)浄土宗の開祖法然が天台宗の学匠顕真の招請をうけ，洛北大原の勝林院において諸宗の碩学を相手に論議したこと。大原問答ともいう。ことの起りは，顕真が法然に会って出離の道をたずね，法然から阿弥陀仏の願力を強縁として凡夫が浄土に往生できる旨を聞いたが，なお疑心とけず，100日間籠居して浄土の典籍について研究し，その後改めて法然を招いて論談することになったものである。顕真のほか，明遍(三論)，貞慶(法相)，智海(天台)，湛学(同)ら諸宗の学僧が参会し，法然の述べる浄土宗義に対して詰問した。
