A Western Asian drum. In Iran it is called a tavul and in Turkey a davul. It is a drum with two pieces of leather stretched over a wooden cylindrical body, and is often used in folk music such as to accompany dances. The shallow body is generally made from a rolled thin board of poplar or walnut. They come in various sizes, and are made by fitting sheep, goat, cowhide or other materials into a wooden frame and tightening it with string. Sometimes thick leather is stretched on the right side and thin leather on the left side. The drum is hung from the shoulder, and a large wooden stick with a knob at the end is held in the right hand and a very thin stick-like drumstick in the left hand.
