Japanese common squid (Japanese common squid)
This cephalopod squid (Ommastrephas nigricans) is the most commonly eaten squid in Japan (illustration). Its mantle is about 30 cm long, with black vertical stripes along its dorsal line, and its fins are diamond-shaped and extend over the dorsal tip. Its arms are about half the length of its mantle, with two rows of suckers, and its tentacles are longer than its arms but shorter than its mantle. It lives at depths of 30 to 100 m from Sakhalin to Kyushu, the Korean Peninsula, and Primorsky Krai. Its main spawning grounds are in the East China Sea, extending south of Kyushu. It spawns in the summer and winter, when eggs are released into the sea, hatching between December and May, and becoming adults in one year and swimming in schools.
