Japanese: ホウライカズラ - ほうらいかずら

An evergreen, climbing woody plant of the Logaceae family (illustration). The leaves grow opposite each other on green, hairless stems. The leaves have petioles about 1 cm long, are ovate to oblong, have entire, pointed edges at both ends, are less than 10 cm long, and are hairless. In summer, one or two flowers hang down from pedicels emerging from the leaf axils. The corolla has five deep lobes and is white with a slight yellowish tint. The fruits ripen red, are spherical, and are about 1 to 1.5 cm in diameter. They are found in warm regions from central Honshu southward, Shikoku, Kyushu, and the Ryukyu Islands. Horticultural varieties with variegated leaves are known, and are occasionally cultivated.
