Tenkawa [village] - Tenkawa

Japanese: 天川[村] - てんかわ

A village in Yoshino District, central Nara Prefecture. Population 2,310 (1995). Located in the center of the Kii Peninsula, this mountain village is surrounded by the Omine Mountains, which are 1,500 to 1,800 meters above sea level. It is in the Tennogawa River basin, upstream of the Totsugawa River, and settlements are scattered in the lowlands on both banks. Most of the village area is forested, and forestry is the main industry, but since there are many artificial forests of cedar and cypress with a high rate of young forests, forestry income is low. In recent years, production of fine wood such as polished logs and tokooki ittobori carvings has become popular. Mount Omine (Sanjogatake), which towers in the east, is a holy place for mountain religion and Shugendo, and many people visit.

奈良県中央部，吉野郡の村。人口2310(1995)。紀伊半島中央部に位置し，周囲を標高1500～1800mの大峰山脈の山々に囲まれた山村。十津川上流の天ノ川流域にあたり，両岸の小低地に集落が点在する。村域の大部分が山林からなり林業が主産業であるが，初齢林率の高い杉，ヒノキの人工林が多いため，林業収入は少ない。近年，みがき丸太などの銘木や床置の一刀彫の生産が盛んである。東部にそびえる大峰山(山上ヶ岳)は山岳宗教，修験道の聖地で訪れる人が多い。
