Boring machine (English: Nakaguriban)

Japanese: 中ぐり盤(中刳盤) - なかぐりばん（英語表記）boring machine

A machine tool used to enlarge an already drilled hole and finish it to precise dimensions. It is characterized by the use of a boring bar that rotates and feeds the tool toward the axis of the hole; the workpiece is placed fixedly on a table or floor, and the boring bar with the attached tool is fed toward the axis, or the table is fed toward the axis of the hole, to perform the machining. Along with the lathe, the boring machine is one of the oldest machine tools, and the success of Watt's steam engine is largely due to J. Wilkinson's boring machine, which made it possible to precisely machine cylinders.

すでに開けられている穴をさらに大きくして，精確な寸法の穴に仕上げるための工作機械。工具を回転しながら穴の軸心方向へ送るための中ぐり棒が用いられることが特徴で，工作物はテーブル，または床板上に固定して置き，工具を取り付けた中ぐり棒を軸心方向に送るか，またはテーブルを穴の軸心方向に送るかして加工を行う。中ぐり盤は旋盤とともにもっとも古くからある工作機械の一種であり，ワットの蒸気機関の成功も，J.ウィルキンソンの中ぐり盤によってシリンダーの精密加工が可能となったことに負うところが大きい。
