Heimito von Doderer

Austrian novelist. Born near Vienna as the son of an architect. He was taken prisoner of war during World War I and held in Siberia for four years. After returning to Vienna in 1920, he studied history and psychology in preparation for becoming a novelist. In 1933, he joined the Nazi Party, which was still illegal in Austria, but later left the party and converted to Catholicism. He began his writing career in the 1920s, and established his position as a novelist with his long novels "The Strudelhof Stairs" (1951) and "Demons" (1956), both set in Vienna after World War II. Influenced by Gütersloh, these two novels use a method of dense structure with multiple plots unfolding simultaneously, recreating the various aspects of Vienna in two eras, before and after World War I, as a single grand panorama. At the same time, he presented the traditional Austrian Catholic worldview rooted in Thomism, which holds that the world created by God continues uninterrupted by any external factors, and rejected the social change that took place after World War I. He also suggested that society after World War II is based on historical continuity. This style is also seen in his novel The Merovingians (1962).

オーストリアの小説家。建築家の子としてウィーン近郊に生まれる。第一次世界大戦で捕虜になり4年間シベリアに抑留され、1920年ウィーンに帰還後、小説家になる準備として歴史と心理学を学んだ。33年オーストリアではまだ非合法であったナチスに入党、のちに脱党してカトリックに改宗した。20年代より作家活動に入ったが、第二次大戦後ウィーンを舞台にした長編『シュトルードルホーフ階段』（1951）と『悪霊(あくりょう)』（1956）で小説家としての地位を不動にした。この二つの小説ではギュータースローの影響を受け、緻密(ちみつ)な構成で複数の筋が同時に展開する手法を用い、第一次大戦前後の二つの時代にまたがったウィーンの諸相を一大パノラマとして再現した。同時に、神が創造した世界はいかなる外的要因によっても断絶されることなく継続するという、トミズムに根ざしたオーストリアの伝統的カトリック世界観を呈示し、第一次大戦後の社会変革の動きを否定した。また、第二次大戦後の社会も歴史の連続性のうえにあることを示唆した。この作風は長編『メロビング家』（1962）などにも貫かれている。
