The capital of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), southeast Africa. It is located at an altitude of 1,150 meters in the mountainous region in the west of the country, and is only 20 kilometers from the border with the Republic of South Africa. Population 73,000 (1999 estimate), 60,691 (2017 census). It developed after the government was moved from Manzini in 1902 under the British protectorate. Although it is located in a more skewed position than Manzini, which is in the center of the country, the high altitude makes it a comfortable climate and suitable for white settlers to live in. In 1964, a railway was opened to transport iron ore from the nearby Bombridge iron deposits to Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) in Mozambique, and it became the capital with independence in 1968. The center of the town is Alistair Miller Street, lined with government offices, banks, hotels, etc. The royal palace is in Lobamba, about 16 kilometers southeast. The place name is derived from the 19th century Swazi King Mbandozeni. [Ken Akasaka] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
