Mousterian culture

A culture that flourished in Europe during the Middle Paleolithic. The reference site is Le Mouster in the Dordogne region of France. The main tools used were crude bone tools, piercing tools made from flakes, and long, thin knives that were thought to have been used for various purposes, and the Neanderthals were the ones responsible. From this cultural layer, we can see that they used fire and buried their dead. They acquired various technologies, expanded their living area much more than before, and began to migrate to northern regions. There are cultures that show similar features in Western Asia, North Africa, Central Asia, and Western Siberia surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. The one in Eastern Europe is called the Eastern Mousterian culture, the one in Western Asia is called the Levantine-Mousterian culture, the one from Central Asia to Western Siberia is called the Siberian Mousterian culture, and the one in North Africa is called the Levallois-Mousterian culture. Each has its own local characteristics, but they share many basic features. There is much discussion about this culture because it is related to the origin of modern humans.

中期旧石器時代にヨーロッパに栄えた文化。標準遺跡はフランス，ドルドーニュ地方のル・ムスティエ。おもな利器は，粗末な骨器のほかに，剥片を使った刺突具，種々の用途にあてられたと考えられる細長いナイフなどで，この文化のにない手はネアンデルタール人である。その文化層から彼らが火を使用し，死者の埋葬を行なっていたことがわかる。彼らは種々の技術を身につけ，従来よりもはるかに生活領域を拡大し，北方地域へも移り住むようになった。地中海を取巻く，西アジア，北アフリカや，中央アジア，シベリア西部にも類似の様相を示す文化が存在している。東ヨーロッパのものは東ムスティエ文化，西アジアのものはレバンタイン・ムスティエ文化，中央アジアからシベリア西部のものはシベリア・ムスティエ文化，北アフリカのものはルバロア・ムスティエ文化と呼ばれ，それぞれ地方色をもつが，基本的な様相は共通するものが多い。現生人類の起源と関連するため，多くの議論が行われている。
