A beach between the Iwata River and the Aikawa River on the Tsu Coast of Ise Bay in central Mie Prefecture. It is also called "Akogiura." The southern half is also called Gotemba Beach. It is part of the Ise-no-umi Prefectural Natural Park. A three-kilometer-long shallow sandy beach backed by a pine forest, it is a seaside recreational spot known for clam digging, swimming, and tateboshi (a feudal lord's game dating back to the time of the Todo clan of the Tsu domain, in which fish are caught by hand from a net). In winter, it is a good fishing spot for seaweed. Nearby is Akogizuka, which enshrines the spirit of Akogi Heiji (Heiji). The story of Heiji, a poor fisherman who was devoted to his mother, who caught a fish called yagara in Akogiura, where killing was forbidden, in order to cure his mother's illness, was punished by being wrapped in a mat and thrown into the sea. This story has become the subject of Noh plays and Joruri, and a grand Bon memorial service is held every year on August 15th. It is also said to be the birthplace of the Kankai Ryuyo swimming style. At the northern end of the coast is the Ise Bay Marine Sports Center, Tsu City's yacht harbor, and nearby is Akogiura Seaside Park.
