Located in the southeastern Bay of Bengal, about 150 km south of the Andaman Islands, this archipelago consists of 19 islands. The main islands are, from north to south, Car Nicobar, Kamorta, Nankauri (with a good harbor), and Great Nicobar. Along with the Andaman Islands, it is a direct territory of the Indian government. It exports hardwood and copra. The indigenous people are of Mongoloid descent. It was a penal colony of British India in 1869. It was occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. It covers an area of 1,841 ^km2 . It has a population of 36,819 (2011).
