Hague Agreement

Japanese: ハーグ協定 - ハーグきょうてい(英語表記)Hague Agreement
Hague Agreement
The agreement on the transfer of sovereignty between the Netherlands and Indonesia was concluded on November 2, 1949 in The Hague, Netherlands. Its contents consisted of (1) the Sovereignty Transfer Charter, (2) the Dutch-Indonesian Union Charter, and (3) transitional provisions on nationality, Dutch officials, and the Dutch army, navy, and air force, among others. With this agreement, Indonesia officially gained independence on December 27 of that year after a four-year war of independence, and the two countries formed the Dutch-Indonesian Union as equal independent nations and agreed to cooperate culturally and economically. However, the Indonesian nationalist movement grew again over the ownership of West Irian (Dutch New Guinea), which was left unresolved by the agreement, and the union was dissolved in 1954, and the agreement was completely abolished in 1956 (→West Irian issue).
