A sedimentary phenomenon in which several strata are repeatedly stacked in a certain order. Also called a sedimentary cycle. In large-scale cycles, the thickness of each unit cycle can reach several meters to several hundred meters, and their development is regulated by crustal activity such as marine transgression/regression, sea-level change (change in sea level), and land subsidence/uplift. The vast coal-bearing seams that develop in stable regions of North America and Europe show typical large-scale cycles, but the main cause is that in these vast flat areas, slow up-and-down movements of the earth's crust (also called epigeism) or sea-level changes caused the seawater to spread and become a shallow marine environment, or the seawater to retreat and become a freshwater environment, causing the coal-bearing seams to develop in low-lying marshes.
