Yamaguchi Soken

Yamaguchi Soken
Born in 1759, Kyoto
[Died] October 24, 1818 (Bunsei 1). A painter of the Maruyama School in Kyoto. His pen name was Hakugo, his common name was Takejiro, and his pen names were Soken and Sansai. He studied under Maruyama Okyo and excelled in portraits and bird-and-flower paintings. He was particularly skilled at painting Japanese-style beauties, which made a good pair with the Chinese beauties of his fellow student, Genki. He wrote the Wajinbutsu Gafu (6 volumes). His major works are Beauties and Peacocks (Seikado Bunko).

円山派の画家。字は伯後,通称は武次郎,号は素絢,山斎。円山応挙に師事して人物画,花鳥画を得意とした。特に日本風の美人図を巧みに描き,同門の源 琦の唐美人図と好一対をなした。『倭人物画譜』 (6冊) を著わした。主要作品『美人図』,『孔雀図』 (静嘉堂文庫) 。
