A Greek sculptor active between 480 and 450 BCE. He was born in Eleutherae, northwest of Attica, and is said to have been a pupil of the Argos sculptor Ageladas. He specialized in bronze sculpture, and skillfully expressed the momentary stillness of the body, full of tension caused by intense exercise. He is considered a pioneer of classical art, and copies of his works such as "Discobolos (Discus)" (National Gallery of Rome) and "Athena and Marsyas" (Laterano Museum, Rome) remain to this day, but no copies of his animal figures, such as "The Golden Bull," which are praised as masterpieces in ancient documents, remain.
