Excluding those served at home, food and drink are provided in facilities that can be broadly divided into two categories: firstly, mass catering facilities in schools, hospitals, companies, etc.; and secondly, cafeterias in independent stores, hotels, stores attached to retail businesses, etc. The latter can be further broadly divided into those that primarily serve meals and those that primarily serve beverages such as alcohol and coffee. The food and drink industry is the industry that supplies these, but in recent years the term "eating out industry" has also become established as opposed to meals at home. For the history of the food and drink industry, please refer to the entries for "restaurants" and "restaurants." Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
