Food and beverage industry

Japanese: 飲食業 - いんしょくぎょう

Excluding those served at home, food and drink are provided in facilities that can be broadly divided into two categories: firstly, mass catering facilities in schools, hospitals, companies, etc.; and secondly, cafeterias in independent stores, hotels, stores attached to retail businesses, etc. The latter can be further broadly divided into those that primarily serve meals and those that primarily serve beverages such as alcohol and coffee. The food and drink industry is the industry that supplies these, but in recent years the term "eating out industry" has also become established as opposed to meals at home. 飲食は，自宅におけるものを除くと，第1に学校，病院，企業等の集団給食施設，第2に独立した店舗，ホテル，小売業等に付帯した店舗による食堂の二つに大別される施設によって提供される。後者は，さらに食事を主とする場合と，酒，コーヒーなど飲物を主とする場合とに大別される。飲食業とはこれらを供給する産業であるが，家庭での食事に対するものとして近年は外食産業という言葉も定着した。飲食業の歴史については〈飲食店〉〈料理店〉の項を参照されたい。
