Silver orchid - Silver orchid

A perennial plant of the orchid family (APG classification: Orchidaceae). The entire plant is glabrous, with stems 20-40 cm tall. The leaves are oblong, 3-7 cm long, and 3-5 leaves arranged alternately on the stem. In April and May, the terminal inflorescence produces several white flowers. The bracts are usually shorter than the ovary. The flowers are 5-7 mm in diameter and do not open flat. The base of the lip petal forms a very short spur, 1-2 mm long. It grows in grasslands and under forests on low mountains, and is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan, China, and the Himalayas. It is in the same genus as the golden orchid. The variety, the Kugenumaran, does not have a well-developed spur, and the Yushunran has poorly developed leaves.

ラン科（APG分類：ラン科）の多年草。全草無毛、茎は高さ20～40センチメートル。葉は長楕円(ちょうだえん)形、長さ3～7センチメートル、3～5枚を茎上に互生する。4、5月、頂生花序に白色の花を数個つける。包葉は通常は子房より短い。花は径5～7ミリメートル、平開しない。唇弁の基部は1～2ミリメートルのごく短い距(きょ)となる。低山の草地や林下に生え、北海道から九州、朝鮮半島、台湾、中国、ヒマラヤに分布する。キンランと同属。変種のクゲヌマランは距が発達しないもの、ユウシュンランは葉の発達の悪いものである。
