A mineral with the chemical composition KAl 3 (SO 4 ) 2 (OH) 6. Hexagonal crystal system. Good cleavage on the basal plane (0001). Rhombohedral crystals or plate, flake, or lump shapes. Mohs hardness 3.5-4, brittle. Specific gravity 2.6-2.9. Vitreous luster. White, grayish, yellowish, reddish, or brownish. When heated, it makes a faint noise and bounces. It is formed by hydrothermal alteration in volcanic rock areas. It has been used as a raw material for aluminum, burnt alum, and potassium fertilizer. In Japan, it is produced from the Tochihara wax deposit in Hyogo Prefecture, but is discarded as it has no use. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
