…It originated as a military camp (Misr) built in 670 by the Arab soldier Uqba ibn Nafi, and is the oldest Islamic city in the Maghreb. It experienced political instability, including occupation by the Berber leader Qusayrah (late 7th century) and by the Islamic heretical Khawarij sect (mid-8th century). It began to prosper when it became the capital of the Aghlabid dynasty in the 9th century, and became the political, economic, religious, and academic center of the Maghreb. …
