Japanese: ミュンシュ
Munch
French conductor. Born in Strasbourg (then part of Germany) in the Alsace region to a German family. He was introduced to music at an early age under his father, who was the director of the local conservatory, and studied violin under Capet (Capet String Quartet) at the Paris Conservatory and C. Flesch (1873-1944) in Berlin. He served as concertmaster of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra from 1926 to 1933. During that time he learned conducting from Furtwängler, and from 1938 to 1946 he was the conductor of the Paris Conservatory Orchestra. From 1949 to 1962 he served as principal conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, succeeding Koussevitzky, and left behind many illustrious performances. In 1967 he became music director of the Orchestre de Paris when it was founded, but died while on a concert tour of the United States with the orchestra. Known for his dynamic and colorful conducting, he has given superb interpretations of French music from Berlioz to Honegger and Dutilleux, as well as German music. → Seiji Ozawa / Lipatti → Related articles Furtwängler
