Japan's largest dissolved natural gas field. It occupies an area of approximately 4,300 km2 from the northern part of the Boso Peninsula to the southern part of the Kanto Plain, with original reserves of approximately 550 billion m3. The gas layer is located in a sedimentary basin of the Kazusa Group in the marine area spanning the Pliocene Epoch of the Neogene to the Pleistocene Epoch of the Quaternary. This group consists of thin (mostly less than 1m thick) alternating layers of sand and mud, and the current gas-producing areas are the Narashino, Chiba, and Ichihara districts on the Tokyo Bay coast, the Asahi to Taito Cape districts on the Pacific coast, and the Narita, Narito, Isumi, and Kamibaku districts inland.
