Hatta Tomoe

Japanese:
Hatta Tomoe
Years of birth: Unknown. Samurai from the end of the Heian period to the beginning of the Kamakura period. Born in Shimotsuke Province (Tochigi Prefecture). Son of Hatta Munetsuna. Some say he was the son of Minamoto no Yoshitomo. Called Shiro and Mushadokoro. In 1183, he defeated Shida Yoshihiro under the command of the Oyama clan, and followed Minamoto no Noriyori in the pursuit of the Taira clan, but incurred the wrath of Minamoto no Yoritomo when he was appointed Uemon-no-jo while in Kyoto. He was later restored to power and played an active role as a powerful vassal. In the Oshu War (1189), he served as the commander-in-chief of the Tokaido army. In 1199, when Shogun Minamoto no Yoriie's personal authority was suspended, he joined the council as one of the 13 senior retainers. The fact that Tomoie's Kamakura mansion was often used as lodging for envoys from Kyoto suggests that he was also familiar with Kyoto culture. He served as Chikugo no Kami and Hitachi no Shugo.
