In the early New South Wales settlements, the conflict between emancipists (former convicts who had served their sentences) and exclusionists was prominent. In the 1840s, the number of ex-convicts and currency lads (those born in the colonies, often the children of convicts) exceeded that of free immigrants. This conflict transformed into one between squatters (large ranchers) and small farmers and itinerant workers such as shearers, and was exacerbated by the population boom caused by the gold rush that began in 1851. *Some of the terminology that mentions "currency lad" is listed below.
