Japanese: 池辺三山 - いけべ・さんざん
Ikebe Sanzan - Ikebe Sanzan
Year of death: February 28, 1912 (Meiji 45)
Year of birth: 12/5/1864 (12/3/1864)
A journalist from the Meiji period. His real name was Kichitaro, and he had other pen names such as Tekkonron. He was the eldest son of Kumamoto feudal samurai father Kichijuro and mother Seiki. During the Seinan War (1877), Kichijuro led the Kumamoto troops in Saigo Takamori's army and was executed. This had a great influence on Miyama in the future. In 1881 (Meiji 14), he moved to Tokyo and studied at Nakamura Keiu's (Masayoshi) private school Dojinsha and Keio Gijuku. In 1887, he entered the world of opinion by submitting an editorial to the Yamanashi Nichinichi Shimbun, and in 1888, he was asked by Tokai Sanshi to become editor-in-chief of the nationalist magazine Keisei Hyoron. However, in 1890, he gave up this position due to poor business performance and began submitting editorials to Nippon. In 1902, he traveled to France as an advisor to the heir of the former feudal lord, Hosokawa Morinari, and from 1902 he contributed "Paris News" to Nippon under the pen name Tekkonron, which earned him fame. In 1904, he became editor-in-chief of the Osaka Asahi Shimbun, and in 1905, he was editor-in-chief of the Tokyo Asahi Shimbun. In 1906, he became a full-time editor of the Tokyo Asahi Shimbun. He wrote numerous editorials on foreign and domestic issues, including a hard-line stance against Russia that called for war. He attempted to modernize the paper, and instilled his belief that "newspaper articles should be clear and eloquent" within the company. After the Russo-Japanese War, he tried to revamp the novel section, and helped Futabatei Shimei and Natsume Soseki join the company and serialize their novels. As a historical commentator, he wrote "On Okubo Toshimichi," "On Ito Hirobumi," and "On Iwakura Tomomi" for Chuokoron, which were published posthumously as "The Three Great Politicians of the Meiji Restoration." <References> Ichiro Ikebe and Kenichi Tominaga, "Sanzan Ikebe: The Birth of a Journalist"
