The name of the region occupying the central part of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina in northern Yugoslavia. In Hungarian it is spelled Bácka. It borders the Danube River to the west and south, Hungary (part of which is Hungarian) to the north, and the Tisza River to the east. It has an area of 8,913 km2 and a population of about 1 million. Its ethnic mosaic composition, including Serbs, Hungarians, Croats, Montenegrins, Slovaks, Macedonians, Slovenes, Germans, Czechs, and Ruthenians, reflects Bácka's complex history.
