(i) A place where noble people such as the emperor and nobles are. The imperial court. (b) A place far removed from the general public in terms of status, position, etc. ※Encouragement of Learning (1872-76) (Fukuzawa Yukichi) 5 "The government is above the clouds and governs the country." ③ (by extension from ①) In Kabuki, musical instruments are played loudly and in a flashy manner.
