〘Noun〙 (formerly "unsho")①Above the clouds. A place high in the sky with clouds. ※Kaido-ki (c. 1223) from Ikeda, Kikukawa "Before the moon above the clouds, jeweled crowns exchange light." ② By extension, a noble place far removed from the general public. (i) A place where noble people such as the emperor and nobles are. The imperial court. The imperial palace. ※Ryounshu (814) March 3rd Banquet (Kayo Tounen) "The dew has left me feeling sober, and I am sending a message of thanks above the clouds." ※Noh play Aoi-no-jo (c. 1435) "A banquet of flowers above the clouds, accustomed to playing on a spring morning." (b) A place far removed from the general public in terms of status, position, etc. ※Encouragement of Learning (1872-76) (Fukuzawa Yukichi) 5 "The government is above the clouds and governs the country." ③ (by extension from ①) In Kabuki, musical instruments are played loudly and in a flashy manner. It is often played as a precursor to the appearance of a gorgeous person. *Kabuki, Shitenno Sanyu Tamagawa (1818), verse 2: "This musical instrument gradually becomes unjau (above the clouds) ." ④ (adjective-verb) The state of things or the attitude of a person is arrogant.
