Mizosoba - Mizosoba

An annual plant of the Polygonaceae family (APG classification: Polygonaceae). The stems creep above the ground, root from the nodes, are 30-70 cm tall, and have inverted thorns. The leaves are alternate, egg-shaped, 4-10 cm long, pointed at the tip, and triangular ear-shaped at the base. The leaves are thin, with barbed spines and stellate hairs scattered on both sides, dull on the surface, and eight-shaped black spots. Green narrow wings appear on the stalks. From August to October, about 10 white or pinkish flowers are borne in heads at the ends of the branches. There are five perianths. The achene is ovoid with three edges, similar to buckwheat (annual plant of the Polygonaceae family), brown, dull, and covered by persistent perianth. It grows in marshes and is distributed in Japan, the Korean peninsula, China, and Ussuri. The Yamamizosoba variety has fewer thorns, wider leaves, and no wings on the petioles. It is found in the Kanto region. The name means buckwheat that grows in ditches.

タデ科（APG分類：タデ科）の一年草。茎は地をはい、節から根を出し、高さ30～70センチメートル、逆向きの刺(とげ)がある。葉は互生し、卵状矛形で長さ4～10センチメートル、先端はとがり、基部は三角状耳形に張り出す。葉質は薄く、両面に逆刺と星状毛がまばらに生え、表面は光沢がなく、八字形の黒斑(こくはん)がある。柄に緑色の狭翼が出る。8～10月、枝先に約10個の白色花または帯紅色花を頭状につける。花被(かひ)は5枚。痩果(そうか)はソバ（タデ科の一年草）に似た3稜(りょう)のある卵形で褐色、光沢はなく、宿存する花被に包まれる。湿地に生え、日本、および朝鮮半島、中国、ウスリーに分布する。変種ヤマミゾソバは刺が少なく、葉幅は広く、葉柄に翼はない。関東地方に分布する。名は、溝に生えるソバの意味である。
