Hugo (of Saint Victor)

An early scholastic theologian and mystic. His French name was Hugues de Saint-Victor. Born in Belgium or Saxony in Germany, he entered the Abbey of Saint-Victor in Paris in 1115, and later became its abbot and founder of the Saint-Victor school. He revered Augustine and was influenced by the mysticism of Dionysius the Areopagite, and believed that the ultimate goal of theology was to gaze mystical upon God. This was the beginning of the mystical theology that was passed down to Bonaventure.

初期スコラの神学者，神秘主義者。フランス名はユーグ･ド･サン･ビクトールHugues de Saint‐Victor。ベルギーあるいはドイツのザクセン地方に生まれ，1115年パリのサン･ビクトール修道院に入り，のちに院長としてサン･ビクトール学派の創始者となった。アウグスティヌスを尊ぶとともに，ディオニュシウス･アレオパギタの神秘主義に影響され，神秘的な神の直視こそ神学の究極目標であるとした。これはボナベントゥーラにうけつがれる〈神秘神学〉のはじめである。
