Year of death: 1348.8.11 (Jiwa 4/Shohei 3.7.16) Year of birth: November 15, 1292 (December 24, 1292) A Zen monk of the Korin school of the Rinzai sect who lived in the late Kamakura period and the Northern and Southern Courts period. He laid the foundation for the rise of Gozan literature. His other names were Rairaizenshi, Jakushodo, and Sikisou. He was from the Xu family of Xiangshan County, Mingzhou (Zhejiang Province). His mother was from the Ouyang family. After studying under Nakamine Myohon and others, he succeeded Korin Kiyomori of Hoei-ji Temple in Jinling (Nanjing). In 1329 (Gentoku 1), he came to Japan with Myogyoku Soshun, and lived at Jomyo-ji Temple in Kamakura at the behest of Hojo Takatoki. He later received the patronage of Ashikaga Takauji, Tadayoshi, and others, and in 1334 (Kenmu 1), he moved to Jochi-ji Temple, and also became the founder of Muryoji Temple in Miura, Sagami (Kanagawa Prefecture). In 1341, he was ordered by imperial decree to live at Nanzen-ji Temple in Kyoto, and then moved to Shinnyo-ji Temple in Yamashiro (Kyoto Prefecture) and then to Kencho-ji Temple in Kamakura. He raised the standard of Japanese Zen temples, and also established a group of friends called Kongo-dōka with those who had studied under Kiyomori, and made a great contribution to the transplantation of Song and Yuan culture through literary activities.
