The total population is 1.97 million (1996), of which over 100,000 migrate to South Africa each year to work in mines and farms. Most of the population is African, about 80% of whom are Sotho (Basotho), the rest are Zulu. In addition, there are 2,000 whites, a few coloreds (mixed races), and several thousand Asians, especially Indians.
