An old town in the western part of the Osumi Peninsula facing Kagoshima Bay in Kimotsuki District, Kagoshima Prefecture. In the Middle Ages, it was the territory of the powerful Nejime clan. Livestock farming, greenhouse horticulture, fruit and tobacco cultivation are thriving. 鹿児島県肝属(きもつき)郡,鹿児島湾に面する大隅半島西部の旧町。中世は豪族禰寝(ねじめ)氏の領地。畜産をはじめ,施設園芸,果樹・タバコ栽培が盛ん。2005年3月肝属郡佐多町と合併し町制,南大隅町となる。88.49km2。7050人(2003)。
