Chloro-alkali electrolysis

An industrial method for producing sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and chlorine (Cl2 ₎ by electrolyzing salt water. There are three methods: the diaphragm method, the mercury method, and the ion exchange membrane method.
[Diaphragm method]
The electrolytic cell is divided into two compartments by an asbestos diaphragm. A DSE anode (a titanium Ti plate with an electrode catalyst such as ruthenium oxide (IV) _RuO2 on its surface; also known as a dimensionally stable electrode) is placed in one compartment, and an iron mesh cathode is installed in the other compartment. The purified salt water is supplied to the anode compartment and flows through the diaphragm to the cathode compartment.

［隔膜法］
　アスベスト隔膜を用いて仕切った2室からなる電解槽の1室にDSE陽極(チタンTi板の表面に酸化ルテニウム(IV)RuO₂などの電極触媒を付けた電極。寸法安定電極dimentionally stable electrodeともいう)を置き，他室に鉄網陰極を設ける。精製した食塩水は陽極室に供給し，隔膜を通って陰極室に流れるようになっている。
