A perennial herb of the Onagraceae family (illustration). It grows in colonies under or on the forest edges of hilly or low mountainous areas, and is widely distributed throughout Japan, Korea, China, and the Indochina Peninsula. The Japanese name was given to this plant because the spherical nuts that grow in a raceme resemble polka dots. It grows by extending slender creeping branches underground. The plant is 30-50 cm tall, and the stems and inflorescences have short, curvaceous hairs. The leaves grow in pairs, and the leaf blades are long and ovate, 5-10 cm long, 2-5 cm wide, and have long stalks. The inflorescences grow in the axils of the terminal and upper leaves, and can reach up to 15 cm in length. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
