In February 1945, an anti-Japanese armed uprising was launched by soldiers of the Blitar (a small city in Kediri Province, East Java) corps of Peta (Java Volunteer Defense Forces) in Java, Indonesia, which was under Japanese occupation. It is said that the cause of the uprising was resentment against the harsh economic exploitation and requisition of laborers under military rule, as well as the tyrannical attitude of the ruling Japanese military. After attacking a prison to release political prisoners, the rebels attacked a Japanese hotel and a plantation office, killing and wounding several Japanese and Chinese. However, the uprising was put down within a few days by the overwhelming superiority of the Japanese military. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
