Aikawa [town] - Aikawa
An old town in Sado County, western Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture. Occupies the western half of the Great Sado Mountains, most of which is mountainous. The main settlement, Aikawa, is a former mining town that prospered due to the Sado Gold Mine, which was directly controlled by the shogunate, and is home to the site of the magistrate's office. Its main industries are agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and tourism. It also produces Mumyoi ware since ancient times. Senkaku Bay and Kaifu Coast belong to the Sado-Yahiko-Yoneyama Quasi-National Park. In March 2004, it merged with Ryotsu City and the Sado County villages of Sawada, Kanai, Niiho, Hatano, Mano, Ogi, Hamo, and Akadomari to form Sado City. Area: 192.31 km2 . Population: 9,233 (2003).
