A politician in Russia and the Soviet Union. Born in Georgia. Joined the Russian Social Democratic Party in 1903. Participated in many revolutionary movements. After the February Revolution, returned to Petrograd (now St. Petersburg) from exile. During the Civil War, he was a leader of the Red Army. As a Stalinist leader, he became chairman of the Supreme Council of National Economy in 1930 and People's Commissar for Heavy Industry in 1932.
