Pilobolus

Japanese: ミズタマカビ（英語表記）Pilobolus

A zygomycete fungus of the Mucoraceae family that often grows on new feces of herbivorous animals. It is the first mold to grow on feces, with a stalk that extends to about 2-3 cm and swells into a rice spoon shape at the end of which a pouch containing shiny, flat spores (sporangia) forms. The long stalk is phototropic and contains carotenoid pigments, making it colorless to yellow. When the spores are fully ripe, the sporangia is forcefully ejected about 2 cm from the tip of the stalk facing the light. The group of ejected spores lands on the surface of the leaves, where they are eventually eaten by the animal, pass through the intestines, and are then released again in the feces.

草食動物の新しい糞（ふん）の上によく発生する接合菌類ケカビ科の菌。糞の上に生えるカビの中で最初に出るもので，2～3cmぐらいにのびる柄の先がしゃもじ形にふくらみ，その先端に黒光りする平たい胞子を入れた袋(胞子囊)ができる。長い柄は光屈性があり，カロチノイド色素をふくむので，無色～黄色となる。胞子が十分に熟すると，光の方に向いた柄の先端から胞子囊が強く2cmほどはじきとばされる。とばされた胞子の集団は葉の表面につき，やがて動物に食べられ，腸内を通り，再び糞として外に出るとされている。
