...AA Milne's Winnie the Pooh (1926) broke new ground, and JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit (1937) and The Lord of the Rings (1954-55) perfected fairy tales. CS Lewis dealt with the issue of good and evil in his seven stories about the fictional country of Narnia (The Chronicles of Narnia, 1950-56), PL Travers's Mary Poppins five-part series (1934-82) created a new witch with humor, and M. Norton also depicted a miniature world of dwarves who lived by borrowing things from humans in a five-part series (1952-82). Fantasy is the essence of British children's literature, and the heyday of the genre continued in the 1950s and 1960s with masterpieces such as P. Pearce's Tom in the Midnight Garden (1958), LM Boston's Green Knowe series (1954-76), R. Hoban's The Adventures of the Mouse and His Son (1967), A. Garner's works based on Welsh legends (1960-), and W. Mayne's The Boy Drummer Who Disappeared into the Earth (1966).
