Stephen Wilcox

American mechanical engineer. Initially collaborating with DM Stillman, he invented a new type of water-tube boiler that efficiently evaporated water, which he patented in 1856. He continued his research into boilers, and ten years later, together with Babcock, he patented a new type of boiler with horizontal water tubes. The Babcock-Wilcox boiler, one of the water-tube boilers currently in widespread use for generating electricity, is an improved version of this boiler. In 1880, he was recommended for life membership by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and in 1881, he founded the Babcock-Wilcox Company with Babcock.

アメリカの機械技術者。最初スティルマンD. M. Stillmanと協同し、水の蒸発を能率的に行う新型の水管ボイラーを発明し、1856年に特許をとった。さらにボイラーの研究を続け、10年後にバブコックとともに水管を横型とした新型ボイラーの特許をとった。現在発電用のボイラーとして広く使用されている水管式ボイラーの一つであるバブコック‐ウィルコックスボイラーはその改良型である。1880年にアメリカ機械学会の終身会員に推薦され、1881年、バブコックとともにバブコック‐ウィルコックス会社を設立した。
