A marine fish of the Alectoridae family in the order Aquilegia. It has a huge mouth and tine-like teeth, and devours fish, squid, octopus, shrimp, etc. The English names Lancetfish, Handsaw Fish, and Wolf Fish come from this shape and habit. The body is long and thin. The Japanese name comes from the fact that the flesh contains a lot of water. The dorsal fin covers almost the entire dorsal edge except for a part of the rear half where the adipose fin is located, is fan-shaped, and is two to three times the height of the body. The anal fin is located at the rear end of the dorsal fin and near the bottom of the adipose fin, and the pelvic fin is located forward of the center of the body.

ヒメ目ミズウオ科の海産魚。巨大な口ときば状の歯をもち，魚類，イカ･タコ類，エビ類などを貪食（どんしよく）する。英名のlancetfish,handsaw fish,wolf fishはこのような形態や習性に由来する。体は細長くやせ細る。和名は肉質が水分を多く含むことによる。背びれは脂びれのある体の後半の一部を除き背縁のほぼ全体を覆い，うちわ状で，その高さは体高の2～3倍に達する。しりびれは背びれの後端と脂びれの下付近に，腹びれは体の中心より前方にある。
