Magnesium is a mineral whose main component is Mg. Magnesium is found in over 60 types of minerals, but only four types are used industrially: dolomite (Ca,Mg)CO ₃ , magnesite MgCO ₃ , brucite Mg(OH) ₂ , and olivine (Mg,Fe) ₂ SiO ₄ . However, the main source of magnesium metal and compounds is salt water such as seawater and salt lakes. The world's production of the metal in 1996, excluding secondary recovery, was about 340,000 tons, with the major countries being the United States (130,000 tons), Canada (50,000 tons), and China (50,000 tons).
