Stone and concrete are strong in compression but weak in tension. Therefore, structures that take advantage of this characteristic are support structures. In contrast, cables are weak in compression but strong in tension. A cable structure makes good use of this property and is also called a suspension structure, or a vine structure. Suspension bridges are a typical example of cable structures, and suspension bridges made from natural materials such as ivy have been in use since ancient times.
