[1] The abbreviation for the Imperial Academy, or the Japan Academy after its reorganization. A certain number of scholars with outstanding academic achievements are organized as lifelong members to give preferential treatment. Members are lifetime, with 70 in the humanities department and 80 in the natural sciences department. [1] 帝国学士院、また、その改組後の日本学士院の略称。学問上功績の顕著な学者を優遇するため一定数を終身会員として組織する。身分は終身で、人文科学部門七〇人、自然科学部門八〇人で構成。年金が支給される。※国民新聞‐明治四〇年（1907）一一月二九日「文部省は既に碩学鴻儒を網羅して学士院を設置し〈略〉純正学術の研究調査をなしつつある」[2] 〘名〙かつて、中国の宮中で、翰林(かんりん)学士などが勤務していた場所。
