Crushed stone with a diameter of about 12 to 20 cm used in foundation construction. The name is thought to have come from the fact that round stones with a diameter of about 10 to 15 cm found on riverbanks were called kuriishi. When constructing the foundations of roads, walls, fences, and buildings, crushed stones are used in the process of compacting the ground. In crushed stone construction, the ground is first leveled, and then the crushed stones are densely arranged on a set of rafters, and gravel mixed with sand, called cut gravel, is filled in between the gaps to fill them, and the stone is compacted by hand or with a rammer. Concrete (called 'samurai concrete') is then generally poured on top of the stone. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
