It can be translated as "black music," but it was a word that was hardly used until 1967, when black poet and jazz critic LeRoi Jones (1934-) published a book with this title. Jones used it as an alternative to the previously used word "jazz," but since the 1970s, as various forms of black music, including African music, have come to be highlighted, the word has come to be used in a broader sense.
