The basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the ratio of the amount of energy consumed during a day at rest, without food, and at a critical temperature, to exclude functional consumption due to muscle work, etc. The basal metabolic rate for adults is said to be 1,200 to 1,400 kcal per day for Japanese and 1,500 to 2,000 kcal per day for Westerners.
