Osprey (English spelling)

Japanese: ミサゴ(鶚) - ミサゴ（英語表記）osprey

A bird of the order Accipitridae (Accipitridae) (illustration). An oddity among the hawks, it feeds almost exclusively on fish. Because its anatomical characteristics differ from those of other hawks, some scholars consider it to be an independent family, the Osprey family, with its own genus and species. Males are about 55 cm long, while females are about 64 cm long. It is slightly smaller than a black kite, but has longer wings and a whitish head and underside, making it appear larger in flight. Its back is dark brown, and the area from behind the eyes to the back of the neck is also brown. It also has a light brown band on its chest.

タカ目タカ科の鳥（イラスト）。タカ科の中の変りものでもっぱら魚類を主食とする。解剖学的特徴が他のタカ類と違っているため，ミサゴ科として1属1種の独立の科とする学者もいる。全長は雄が約55cm，雌は約64cm。トビよりやや小型だが，翼がより長く，頭部と下面が白っぽいので，飛翔（ひしよう）中はトビより大きく見える。背面は暗褐色で，眼の後ろから後頸（こうけい）にかけても褐色である。また，胸に淡褐色の帯がある。
