A Russian (Soviet) poet. He started out as an Acmeist poet, rebelling against the aesthetics of Symbolism and pursuing concrete and clear beauty. He was arrested during the Stalin era and died in a concentration camp. A Russian Jew with an open sensibility to world culture, his poetry is notable for its refined formal beauty, musicality, and philosophical lyricism, and he had a strong influence on Paul Celern and others. In addition to the poetry collections The Stone (1913) and Tristia (1922), he also produced the experimental novel The Egyptian Stamp (1928) and the autobiographical prose The Buzz of Time (1925).
