Higashiawakura [village] - Higashiawakura

Japanese: 東粟倉[村] - ひがしあわくら

A village in Aida County, in the northeastern corner of Okayama Prefecture. Population 1,448 (1995). It is located on the western foot of Ushiroyama (1,345m), the highest peak in the prefecture, and borders Hyogo Prefecture to the east. Most of the area is mountainous, except for a narrow valley plain along the Ushiroyama River, a tributary of the Yoshino River. Agriculture and forestry are the main industries, and the area produces timber, chestnuts, mitsumata, konjac, etc., but the scale is extremely small. Ushiroyama, which is said to have been founded by En no Gyoja, still has a Shugendo training center that is off-limits to women, and Dosenji Temple attracts ascetics from all over the country.

岡山県北東端，英田（あいだ）郡の村。人口1448(1995)。県下最高峰の後山（うしろやま）(1345m)西麓に位置し，東は兵庫県に接する。吉野川の支流後山川に沿って狭長な谷底平野があるほかは山地がほとんどである。農林業が主産業で，木材，クリ，ミツマタ，コンニャクなどを産するが，規模はきわめて零細である。役行者（えんのぎようじや）の開山といわれる後山には，今なお女人禁制の修験道場があり，道仙寺には全国から修行者が集まる。
