…He called himself Afghan, but was born in Iran. That is why he is called Asadābādī in Iran. He sensed the threat of Europe early on after the British suppression of the Sepoy Rebellion and the fall of the Mughal Empire. He became involved in the political struggles of Afghanistan and fled to Istanbul, but he was persecuted by the ulama, who considered his philosophical ideas to be heretical, and settled in Cairo in 1871.
